Most wolves find their pack in the forest. This one found his on a ship. Right now the wolf collection belongs to a single officer: a wolf in full navy dress uniform, white-topped cap set just so, raising a mug of beer between two banners that read I've Got This… and Hold My Beer. It is the portrait of an animal who made his decision a long time ago and has never once thought about turning back.
The uniform does the talking
Look closely and the details keep stacking up. There is a gold badge on the front of the cap, a neat row of ribbons across the chest, a small flag patch on the sleeve, and buttons lined up like they passed inspection this morning. His fur is thick and grizzled around a face that has clearly stood a few night watches and did not complain about any of them. Nothing about the way that jacket sits says rookie. This is a wolf who knows exactly where his medals go and exactly how long it took to earn each one.
The mug is not regulation
Then there is the mug. It is tall and golden with a foam cap spilling over the rim, held up at shoulder height like a salute he improvised on the spot. His expression is steady and a little smug, the look of an officer who knows the ceremony is over and the good part of the evening has officially begun. The banners wrap around him like a ship's crest, dark blue with white stars at the tips, so the whole design reads like a badge he designed for himself and approved without a meeting.
For the ones who served and the ones who wait up
This design is for the sailor who still makes the bed tight enough to bounce a coin off it, the retired chief with the port story everybody can recite along with him, the recruit heading out to sea and the family who is proud of him and a little nervous about it. It is also for the people who simply love wolves: the loyalty, the howl, the firm refusal to be told where to roam. Picture the guy who walks into the backyard party as a guest and somehow ends up running the grill, handing out orders and burgers in equal measure. You can already see him in it. Every pack has an alpha, and this wolf outranks him.
