Penguins are famously graceful in the water and famously wobbly on land. Put one on skates and something wonderful happens. The Ice Skating collection stars a single penguin who laced up, hit the ice, and discovered he was born for this, with a cold one in his flipper to celebrate the moment.
Dressed for the rink
He wears a bright orange scarf knotted at the neck, trailing behind him like a ribbon, and a pair of matching orange skate boots with blades that catch the light. His tuxedo feathers do the rest. Penguins arrive at the rink already in formal wear, which gives them a serious head start on every figure skater who spent weeks picking out a costume.
Mid-glide
One foot pushes back, the other carries him forward, and his body leans into the stride with total confidence. His free flipper swings out for balance while the other holds up a bottle like a medal he has already won. Beneath his blades a thin sheet of ice shines pale blue, and all around him bursts of watercolor splash out in orange, green, yellow and sky blue, as if every stroke of the skate sends up a spray of color. On a dark background it reads like the finale of an ice show, lights up and music at full volume.
Why he fits the ice
Skating is part grace, part nerve and part hoping nobody is filming when you fall. This penguin has all three sorted, mostly by deciding falling is simply not on the schedule. He is the patron saint of anyone who has ever let go of the rail for the first time and felt like an Olympian for exactly four seconds.
For the one who owns their own skates
This is for the figure skater who still practices spins at the public session, the hockey family whose weekends belong to the rink, the friend who goes to the outdoor rink every December and holds hands with the wall the whole time, and anyone who knows the joy of the first smooth glide of the season. Picture them seeing this penguin and recognizing their own proud little stride. The resurfacer just rolled off, the ice is fresh, and the penguin has claimed first lap.
