En Garde, Bonehead: A Skeleton Who Fences With a Pint in Hand

Fencing is a sport of elegance, precision and centuries of tradition. Our fencer has read about all three and chosen to bring a beer instead. The Fencing collection is a single, gloriously committed design, and it makes a strong case that one great duelist is all a collection really needs.

The lunge

A skeleton in full fencing whites drops into a deep lunge, mesh mask on, foil extended low and steady in one bony hand. His ribs show right through the jacket, which tells you exactly how many years he has been practicing. The other arm is flung out behind him for balance, and at the end of it, perfectly level, sits a frosty mug of beer. Not a drop out of place. That is the kind of wrist control coaches dream about.

The scene

Behind him burns a round golden sunset, the sky fading from orange to amber, with the silhouette of a domed old city along the horizon. It gives the whole thing the feel of a classic swashbuckler poster, the kind of duel that happens on a rooftop at dusk right before the music swells. Above him, in big warm lettering, it says En Garde. Below him, the verdict: Bonehead. Whether that is a challenge to his opponent or a note about his own technique is left for the viewer to decide.

Why it works on its own

Fencers are a small, loyal crowd, and they rarely see their sport show up anywhere outside the strip. This design gets the details right, from the mask to the foil to the stance, and then adds exactly one thing that would get him disqualified. The colors run warm gold and sunset orange with crisp white and gray, so the figure stands out clean and bright.

For the one who salutes before every bout

This is for the college fencer who still keeps a foil in the car, the parent who drives to every tournament and now knows what a parry is, the friend who took one class, loved it, and has been doing dramatic lunges in the kitchen ever since, and anyone who has quoted a pirate movie while holding a wooden spoon. Picture your duelist opening the gift and immediately striking the pose. Clear the coffee table first and keep the good glassware out of lunging range.
