Emergency crews are famously bad at accepting a compliment. Say something sincere to a medic and watch them change the subject in under three seconds.
So do not say it. Hand them a shirt with a fox on it. They will laugh, they will wear it, and the thank you lands anyway without anybody having to have a moment about it.
